After the successful first online workshop, Cross Encounters is continuing to hold a series of delightful and instructional free online workshops in the rest of this year! As part of our public program 2020, we provide cross-cultural theatrical presentation and communication for theatre lovers by introducing guest artists and organising regular relevant activities. We are thrilled to invite you to enjoy cross encounters journey and celebrate our playful cultural experiences!
In the workshop this month, experienced stage director Pengpeng (current artist director in Melbourne Chinese Theatre) and Hugo Williams(co-founding member of ‘PONY CAM’’) will be sharing their experiences as theatre makers ‘breaking the fourth wall’, and how does the audience response to that, what are the great/magic/unexpected moments on stage when we deliver a message and the audience take it well/badly. Meantime there will be an interesting discussion between them comparing different understandings and practices with this performance convention in different cultural contexts.
The second half of the discussion will be open for audience Q&A. Whether you are totally new to theatre acting or a insider who wants to discuss about how we as theatre makers ‘breaking the fourth wall’, and how does the audience response that, you are all welcome to share your questions, reflections, and concerns. It’ll be a fresh dialogue between theatre insiders and the wider community. Come and join us, express yourself, and have fun in the weekend!
About Hugo:
Hugo is a graduate of both a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Theatre) at VCA and a Bachelor of Arts at University of Melbourne (Ancient Studies). His practice is often positioned between the thought processes and privileged hierarchies of these two vocations. Hugo is a co-founding member of ‘PONY CAM’ – a new theatre collective that is grounded in creating reactive, responsive relationships with audiences and making them complicit in his collectives contradicting politics. Hugo has worked as a director on both classical text adaptations, devised works and new contemporary scripts. He believes that his practice is a way to become a more honest and accountable human.
About Pengpeng:
Pengpeng is the artist director, playwright and actor in Melbourne Chinese Theatre. He used to be the producer of the performing arts centre in Shanghai Theatre Academy, and has been directing and producing many works with University of Melbourne Student Theatre Group since he came here almost a decade ago. Pengpeng is also the director of Theatreshow.Melb – an online service platform on Wechat, which aims to translate and promote the English Theatre shows to the Chinese Community.
